About the Shop
The Corner Shop has been an extended ministry of FBC Exeter having provided an important service to the community since its inception in 2002. It made its official grand opening on Saturday, March 9 of that year. The Thrift Shop, as it was known then, was launched under the creative leadership of Mabel Cummings; and since that time, volunteers have given many hours of their time to continue this service to the greater Exeter area. This has been a great community service with many benefits. It benefits the community since good clothing is available at very low and affordable prices. It also benefits the church in that it provides some funding for church programs in serving the church and community. All of this has been possible through the generosity of people within the community, in that donations of slightly used clothing for women, men and children of all ages are gratefully accepted from individual donors and organizations.
The Corner Shop has been managed efficiently by Doris Smart and Bessie Bickford in recent years who volunteer two days each week to keep the shop alive and active. Bessie and Doris have been instrumental and faithful in directing the process and carrying this caring ministry forward. Originally called the Thrift Shop, it changed its name to “The Corner Shop” in January of 2006. So the Thrift Shop became the Corner Shop, but the real value to the community has been apparent regardless of its name. Additional volunteers are always welcomed to sort and press clothing and to help with the display. First Baptist Church of Exeter is proud to provide this service as part of its outreach in caring for others.
